Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera could leave Athletic Bilbao for Boca Juniors in Argentina.
The Spaniard signed for United in 2014 and left on a free in 2019 after failing to agree a new contract with the club.
He played 189 times for the Old Trafford side, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, winning the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the Europa League during his time in England.
After leaving United, he went on to play three season with Paris Saint-Germain and is now in his third season back at his former club, Athletic Bilbao.
Spanish outlet Fichajes report that Herrera is wanted by a club who have a collection of former United players.
Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Edinson Cavani all represent Boca Juniors and according to the website, Herrera might be the next ex-Red Devil to line up for the Xeneizes.
Fichajes report that “the transfer market in South America could surprise with a high-profile move: Boca Juniors has set its sights on Ander Herrera.”
The Argentine giants’ “management has already initiated preliminary contacts with the player’s entourage, showing serious intentions to incorporate the former Spanish national team player.”
His ties with former teammates and to Spanish coach Fernando Gago “seem to be key factors in this operation” as the coach is pushing for Boca to make a move for the 35 year old midfielder.
Despite having a contract until this summer, Herrera is said to be “motivated” by a move to Argentinian football and the experience of playing in front of passionate fans whilst being a vital player in one of biggest teams on the continent.
Nonetheless, any deal may be tough to complete due to the contractual complications that exist in Spanish football.
The former United man has so far played 13 matches all season for the Basque side but has yet to play a full 90 minutes in a league match in this campaign.
