Dermot Gallagher looking at what happened during key moments in this eventful game at Goodison Park.

Newcastle United totally dominating the match but failing to take advantage against a very negative home side and manager in Sean Dyche.

Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about these Everton v Newcastle United controversial incidents:

James Tarkowski drags Sandro Tonali to the ground in the penalty area. The referee on the pitch gives nothing but after VAR spot what happened, they direct the referee to the pitchside monitor and the penalty is given.

Correct decision.

Dermot Gallagher explanation:

“I don’t think anybody could talk their way out of this one.

“You would really struggle.

“If you wrestle somebody to the ground like this, then VAR picks it up, you can’t unsee that.”

Incident:

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin goes down in the box when he and Newcastle’s Dan Burn come into contact but the incident is dismissed by VAR. Should Everton have been awarded a penalty?

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

Correct decision.

Dermot Gallagher explanation:

“Calvert-Lewin kicks Burn, so no penalty.

“Dan Burn has been clever, he’s put his foot across to protect the ball and Calvert-Lewin has kicked him in the back of the leg rather than the other way around.

“So that is why it is not given.”
