Avispa Fukuoka will look to continue their impressive run when they host struggling Yokohama F. Marinos at Best Denki Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a clash that highlights the contrasting fortunes of two J1 League sides.
Kim Myung Hwi's Fukuoka outfit currently sit sixth in the table with five wins from nine matches and enter the fixture having won four of their last five games. Their most recent outing saw them secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Urawa, where defensive solidity once again proved the foundation of their success.
Yokohama F. Marinos, meanwhile, find themselves in a precarious 17th position with just one win all season. Stephen Holland's side have drawn five and lost three of their nine matches, leaving them firmly in the relegation zone and desperate for points.
The visitors' sole victory came against Gamba Osaka, but they've since failed to win in four attempts, most recently being held to a goalless draw by Tokyo Verdy despite dominating possession.
"We need to show more fighting spirit," Holland has emphasised to his players, though their defensive frailties continue to undermine their efforts.
Avispa Fukuoka captain Tatsuki Nara has recently returned to the bench following a lengthy knee ligament injury, though it remains unclear whether he'll feature on Saturday. The hosts are also without Itsuki Oda and Jurato Ikeda, both recovering from knee surgeries.
Yokohama's problems are compounded by the likely absence of Jeisson Quiñónes, who limped off after just four minutes against Kawasaki Frontale. Jean Claude Aziangbe is suspended after picking up a yellow card in that same fixture, while long-term absentee Takuto Kimura remains sidelined with an ACL tear.
Fukuoka's success has been built on their compact 4-4-2 formation, with Tomoya Ando proving influential with two goals this season. New signing Shahab Zahedi adds physical presence up front, while goalkeeper Masaaki Murakami has been in excellent form.
Yokohama will likely persist with their possession-based 4-3-3 approach, relying heavily on the creativity of Brazilian winger Yan Matheus, who has contributed two goals and an assist this campaign. Daiya Tono, a January arrival from Kawasaki Frontale, will also be crucial to their attacking threat.
The visitors may find it difficult to break down a Fukuoka defence that has kept clean sheets in three of their last five matches, particularly given their own defensive vulnerabilities.
Avispa Fukuoka enter this match with momentum firmly on their side. Their disciplined defensive structure and clinical counter-attacking style should prove effective against a Yokohama side lacking confidence and missing key personnel.
The visitors have shown flashes of quality, particularly in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Kawasaki Frontale, but their inability to convert possession into goals and their defensive fragility suggest they'll struggle at Best Denki Stadium.
Predicted Score: Avispa Fukuoka 2-0 Yokohama F. Marinos
