The season is over for Alen Halilovic. After the 28-year-old Croatian suffered a serious injury against FC Twente last weekend, Fortuna Sittard announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will miss the last six matches of the Eredivisie campaign.
In the final phase of the match against Twente (1-1), Halilovic had to leave the field with an ankle injury. His trainer, Danny Buijs, immediately expected the worst.
“It’s really terrible for that boy”, he said on ESPN. “Alen comes in, he fights, he gives everything. I think it’s a very serious injury. We have the feeling that there is a fracture in his foot, but that remains to be seen.”
Although Fortuna Sittard haven’t yet reported whether a fracture has been diagnosed, Buijs was right about the severity of the situation. Halilovic has only missed one Eredivisie match this season so far. In total, the left-footed dynamo has played 62 matches in Fortuna’s first team. In those matches, he has scored seven goals and provided six assists.
“We wish Alen a speedy recovery”, Fortuna Sittard announced via its own channels. The Limburg club is currently ninth in the Eredivisie and still has a good chance of a place in the play-offs for European football. Halilovic will miss the matches against Feyenoord, Willem II, PSV, NAC Breda, Almere City and FC Utrecht.
