France are out of the Games after a humbling defeat at the hands of Japan.
Goals from Takefusa Kubo, Hiroki Sakai, Koji Miyoshi and Daizen Maeda did the damage, while Les Bleus finished with 10 men after Randal Kolo Muani was sent off in the 74th minute.
Kubo’s goal means he becomes the first player ever to score in three different matches at the Olympics.

Joining Japan in the last eight are Mexico, who beat South Africa in a match where both teams went down to 10 men.
Alexis Vega, Luis Romo and Henry Martín scored the goals, while Repo Malepe was sent off for South Africa before Mexico’s Carlos Rodríguez was also given his marching orders in the second half.
A goalless draw was enough for New Zealand to finish second in Group B.
Romania finished third on goal difference.

There will be no repeat of Argentina’s gold medals in 2004 and 2008 after they exited the Games despite a draw with Spain.
Mikel Merino put La Roja ahead in the second half, only for Tomás Belmonte to equalise late on.

Joining Spain in the quarter-finals are Egypt, who finished second in Group C with a victory over Australia.
Goals from Ahmed Yasser Rayan and Ammar Hamdi sealed the deal.

Brazil finished top of Group D with a victory over Saudi Arabia.
Matheus Cunha gave Brazil an early lead only for Abdulelah Al Amri to cancel it out with an equaliser in the first half.
But two goals from Richarlison late in the game saw Brazil into the quarter-finals.

Germany are out of the Olympics after they could only manage a draw with Ivory Coast.
An own goal from Benjamin Henrichs broke the deadlock deep into the second half, before Eduard Löwen equalised.
But Die Mannschaft finished third in the group, while Ivory Coast are into the quarter-finals.
