Lampard is hoping midfielder Victor Torp’s setback isn’t too big

Frank Lampard has provided a positive update on the injury status of Coventry City midfielder Victor Torp.

The 25-year-old was stretchered off the field just 22 minutes into the Sky Blues’ clash with Portsmouth at the CBS Arena, replaced by Ben Sheaf.

It was all smiles for Coventry at full-time, as Jamie Paterson notched a stoppage-time winner to seal all three points and move his club back into the play-off places – but there will still have been some lingering concern about the key midfield man lost early in the game.

Thankfully, however, Lampard helped to alleviate those fears slightly.

Lampard confirms “not a terrible injury” for Torp

Speaking to CoventryLive after the game, Lampard said: “It’s ankle ligaments and we’re hoping it’s not a terrible injury.

“I don’t know yet but hopefully it’s not as severe as it looked with him being stretchered off. It’s sore and a twist of some nature but hopefully it’s not too bad.

“I don’t know how he did it, whether the twist was in the contact with the Pompey player or the turning motion and got stuck in the ground. I didn’t see.”

The Coventry boss will, of course, need to wait for the medical team to assess the extent of the damage suffered by the midfielder but, given the nature of his exit from the field, it will be comforting to know that Lampard hasn’t immediately recognised it as a serious injury.

Torp has been a key man for Coventry

There can be little overstating just how important Torp has been to Coventry since Lampard arrived and will still be if they manage to secure a spot in the play-offs.

He’s made 36 Championship appearances this season and has been on a hot streak for a few months under the former Chelsea man.

Since Lampard’s arrival, Torp has scored five goals and provided four assists, including crucial, win-securing braces against Watford and Stoke City.

He’s also been a strong presence going the other way, putting in crucial tackles to break up opposition advances.

His assured all-round contributions in the centre of the park will be vital for Coventry if they can get him back for the play-off run-in.

Win against Portsmouth gives Coventry plenty of hope

Although the condition of Torp will be important, it’s hard to argue it was anything other than a great night for Coventry against Portsmouth.

The last-gasp goal to provide the Sky Blues with all three points was enough on its own to warrant huge celebrations.

But the context, that it put the club back in the play-off places, and the scorer, Paterson, a boyhood Coventry fan who achieved a lifelong dream when he signed for the club on a free transfer in February, makes it even more special.

Stories like that can add extra feel-good factor and momentum to a club, and with Coventry having their fair share of those already at the moment, it’s exactly the sort of narrative that could make them the team to fear in the play-offs, despite their late entry.
