Burnley have moved on to other targets after failing to agree a deal with NEC Nijmegen for Sontje Hansen.
Burnley’s offer for NEC Nijmegen winger Sontje Hansen has been turned down, with the club now expected to look elsewhere as they seek attacking reinforcements.
The Clarets are flying high in the Championship, with Scott Parker’s side sitting third in the table as they look to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
However, despite their consistent performances, there are clear areas where Burnley can improve - as they’ve really struggled when it comes to scoring goals and creating chances in comparison to their promotion rivals.
Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that the club are on the lookout for more options in the final third, with recent reports claiming Burnley had made a move for Hansen.
Yet, in a fresh development, Sky journalist Anthony Joseph revealed that the potential transfer is now off, as the Dutch side rejected the Clarets’ offer.
“NEC Nijmegen have knocked back Burnley’s approach for winger Sontje Hansen. The Championship club enquired about a loan with an obligation to buy for £3.5m. It’s understood Burnley have now moved on to other targets.”
Obviously, Hansen is untested in English football, so it’s difficult to say whether he would’ve been a positive addition to Burnley.
He has scored four goals in the Eredivisie this season, and he is a constant threat with his pace and direct style, so he would have been an asset to a Burnley team that often lacks inspiration in the final third.
Clearly, the club didn’t feel he was worth another bid, and the fans will ultimately have to trust the recruitment team to get things right.
What most will agree on is that Burnley do need to bring in another forward player, as despite their excellent defensive record, they aren’t scoring enough or creating chances.
Whilst it’s not a huge concern when the team are picking up results, Burnley are up against three very good sides in the race for a top two finish, so they don’t want to be caught short, and it’s about improving where you can.
So, it will be intriguing to see what business takes place at Turf Moor in the coming days, and whether the club can finalise a deal for the new option they are pursuing instead of Hansen.
