Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is unlikely to use a front three in his starting formation this season, as it is more of an emergency tactic.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

On Saturday, Inter coach Inzaghi decided to have three strikers on the pitch at once against Genoa.

The scoreline was 1-1 in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A opener when Inzaghi decided to put on Mehdi Taremi.

But rather than Taremi replacing one of the strikers, he came on for Hakan Calhanoglu. The Iranian played alongside Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.

It proved to be a successful tactical switch. Inter did get the goal that they were seeking.

And Taremi was directly involved in the goal, whilst Thuram finished it off.

This was certainly an illustration of the value of having three strikers on the pitch.

After the match, Inzaghi hinted that it was a solution that he could opt for more frequently this season.

But according to Tuttosport, that is unlikely the case.

The coach has certainly signalled his readiness to use an attacking trio when his team are pushing for a goal. But the starting eleven should still stick to a 3-5-2 shape.

Inzaghi Unlikely To Start 3-4-3 For Inter Milan This Season

One reason that Tuttosport gives for why Inzaghi is not likely to start with a front three is simply that it would be an inefficient use of the squad.

Inter currently have five senior forwards in the team. That number could be reduced to four if Joaquin Correa leaves.

Clearly, starting with three out-and-out attackers would make it hard to rotate the forwards in the team.

Then, there is the matter of how a front three affects the tactical balance of the team.

Having three forwards on the pitch did help Inter get the goal that they were after against Genoa.

But ultimately, the tactical change also resulted in a loss of midfield control for the Nerazzurri.

Inzaghi will have seen how Inter couldn’t really move the ball up the pitch with any sort of control, and had to rely on more direct attacking with three strikers and two midfielders.

Therefore, Tuttosport argues, the Inter coach is not likely to use three strikers on a regular basis.
