And when Marco Silva subbed him on just after the hour mark, the boss won't have expected him to have such a huge impact on the game away at Tottenham.

On 66 minutes, the 33-year-old smashed in a bending shot from the edge of the box, putting Fulham level at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That was the midfielder's first goal away from home since March 2010 back when he was playing for Hull City, a gap of 14 years and 269 days.

But then Cairney's draw took a dramatic turn on 83 minutes, as he was shown a straight red card for standing on the back of Dejan Kulusevski's calf.

The VAR review adjudged the incident to be 'serious foul play'.
