Stoke City remain keen on a deal for Leicester City's Tom Cannon, but a move could depend on the Foxes signing a striker.

Stoke City remain interested in Leicester City’s Tom Cannon, although any deal is likely to depend on whether the Premier League side can bring in attacking reinforcements before the deadline.

The Foxes are without Jamie Vardy through injury at the moment, with Patson Daka set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines as well.

Therefore, Cannon is likely to be involved for Steve Cooper’s side as they take on Spurs in their top-flight opener on Monday night.

As a result, journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that Leicester are not willing to sanction a temporary move for Cannon until they bring in new forwards.

However, the update does also state that Stoke remain in the driving seat to do a deal for Cannon should he become available later in the window.

The report explains how the Potters are willing to pay ‘almost all’ of the striker’s wages, which some Championship rivals won’t do, so a broad agreement is seemingly in place.

Now, it’s a case of waiting to see if Leicester can do the business they want before the deadline, which is on August 30.

Tom Cannon would improve Stoke City

There’s no denying that Stoke need another striker, particularly after new signing Sam Gallagher picked up an injury, which was an unfortunate blow for Steven Schumacher.

And, Cannon would appear to be an ideal fit. He has the physicality to do well in the Championship, and at 21 he is at an age where he has room to develop, but he proved with Preston in the past that he can score goals at this level.

The former Everton man is also a willing runner, and he will press in the way that Schumacher wants, so he certainly fits the profile of the number nine that Stoke require.

Tom Cannon has to play regular football

There was a lot of excitement around the player earlier in his career, but the move to Leicester hasn’t really worked out.

It was always going to be difficult for him to find a way into Enzo Maresca’s talented squad last season, and that proved to be the case, as Cannon managed just two goals from 13 appearances in the league, with the majority of those outings from the bench.

Another year on the bench wouldn’t be good for his development, so you can be sure the player is desperate to secure a move away on loan to allow him to play week in, week out.

Stoke City’s summer transfer plans

The 3-0 defeat at Watford on Saturday was a reminder that Schumacher still needs to do work on his squad, as they are short in a few areas.

Most would agree that a striker should be the priority, and whilst Cannon is a promising target, they will have to ensure that other options are lined up in case Leicester decide to keep the player.

So, it will be interesting to see how it plays out in the next 12 days, with Stoke back in action at home to West Brom on Saturday.
