Matteo Gabbia was a key player for AC Milan in their 3-0 win against Empoli last night. After the game, he spoke about the positive week, the improvements in defence and his ideal partner at the back.
Gabbia renewed his contract with Milan on Thursday and celebrated with a 3-0 win yesterday, as well as a 7/10 performance. He certainly made life difficult for the Empoli forwards, along with Malick Thiaw, and showed why the Rossoneri renewed him.
Speaking to MilanTV and DAZN after the game, Gabbia discussed the Rossoneri’s performance, the evident improvements at the back and his ideal partner. On the latter question, of course, he was a bit diplomatic.
On the renewal and the win…
“It’s been a great week, but I have to say that I was more focused on this game. I brought something extra because when you have got something good going, you don’t want it to end. Today’s game was crucial for me and for the team to send a message, also to ourselves, to have the right approach, focus and determination to get the win.”
On the defensive display…
“We are working very hard with the coach to improve in the defensive phase. I like to dedicate a few words to our forwards tonight who were a huge help for us defensively. It all started with them. Tonight, Rafa, Morata, Chukwu, Musah, Pulisic were all huge for us. Also Camarda off the bench, Tammy.”
Who is your ideal teammate?
“The coach has already said this. He chooses the players based on who is most suitable for the match in question. This year, we are a quartet of centre-backs who stimulate and Matteo Gabbia MilanTV. The coach then looks for the best solution depending on the match. I get along well with all my teammates and I’m confident. Apart from Pavlovic, I have been playing together for years with the others, but Pavlovic is also a guy who has integrated and when he plays he does well,” he stated.
Gabbia will hopefully continue to play an important role for the Rossoneri and club legend Billy Costacurta even believes he should be made captain. Having grown up at the club, now playing very well too, it wouldn’t be a surprising decision.
