Cody Gakpo will play no part in Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday evening as he recovers from an ankle knock sustained during the Merseyside derby. The Dutch forward’s absence was already felt in the weekend’s victory over Wolves, marking his first missed match of the season through injury. Despite initial hopes following Saturday’s win, Gakpo’s fitness has not returned in time for the Villa Park showdown.

With Manchester City looming on Sunday, Gakpo’s availability remains pivotal. Liverpool manager Arne Slot offered an update during Tuesday’s press conference. When questioned on Gakpo and Joe Gomez’s status, Slot confirmed:
“Both are unavailable for tomorrow. Cody is close to being back, and Joe will take quite a long time.”
The Reds face a blow with Gakpo’s continued absence, but Slot’s assurance that he is “close” to returning offers optimism for the crucial City clash.
Liverpool will regain Curtis Jones from suspension after his one-match ban, providing a timely midfield boost. However, injuries persist, with Gomez (hamstring), Tyler Morton (shoulder), and Gakpo all sidelined. Despite these setbacks, Slot reported no fresh concerns, hinting that the squad from the Wolves win is expected to be available.
In Gakpo’s absence, Luis Diaz is likely to continue on the left flank, with either Darwin Núñez or Diogo Jota leading the attack. Gakpo’s form has been instrumental this season, netting 16 goals—only surpassed by Mohamed Salah’s tally of 28. His continued absence leaves a significant gap in Liverpool’s frontline as they aim to keep pressure on their title rivals.
Meanwhile, Liverpool await the outcome of FA proceedings against Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff following their red cards during the Merseyside derby.
