Manchester City have been a dominant force in recent seasons in the Premier League but have struggled to replicate that this season. Pep Guardiola’s side are fighting to finish in the top four spot at the end of the season so that they can qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
The squad is set to have some big changes in the summer with players departing in the summer. It is already clear that Kevin de Bruyne is set to leave City in the summer. Ilkay Gundogan’s contract ends this summer, and according to Fanatik, Galatasaray are interested in signing the German midfielder for free.
Ilkay Gundogan was a cornerstone of Manchester City during his first spell from 2016 to 2023. The German midfielder brought composure, vision, and clutch goals, like his brace on the final day of the 2021-22 season, to secure the Premier League title. His ability to control games and deliver in big moments made him a Pep Guardiola favorite. However, since returning in 2024 after a stint in Barcelona, Gundogan’s impact has waned. Age and a shift in team dynamics have dulled his influence. Once a linchpin, he now struggles to replicate the magic of his earlier City days.
The midfielder has assisted 3 goals in 27 matches so far in the Premier League 2024/2025 season. Gundogan passes the ball roughly 67.69 times during a game with a pass completion rate of 92.48%. He also plays 1.72 key passes each game. Overall, Gundogan’s expected assists (xA) output is 0.30 per 90 minutes.
City should not stop the midfielder from making the move to Galatasaray if he wants and should not offer him a new contract in the summer. He is already way past his prime, and City bought Nico Gonzalez in the winter transfer window. Moreover, the club will be looking to invest in quality young midfielders in the transfer window to plan for the future. The German midfielder has contributed a lot to the glorious days of Pep Guardiola’s side but it is now time to let him leave for some less prominent team.
