Things are, again, seemingly progressing with the new San Siro, as AC Milan and Inter await the future of their current, and future home.
In recent months, it has been a back and forth about stadiums, with Milan seemingly causing issues due to their preference to keep the San Donato option open. However, it seems that this has now been lessened.
Perhaps, this was due to pressure from the council, who have been persistent in their requests for information, and today, news has emerged about plans for the stadium, which suggests which route is likely to be taken.
Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato.com) reports that the current stadium will have to be destroyed in parts, to allow the new stadium to be built, with current estimations being around 75-80%.
Deconstruction would be ‘done with machines’, states Roberto Spagnolo, who was a coordinator for Atalanta’s new stadium, which needed a partial demolition of the old ground. Expectations currently suggest that this could take as long as four months, but the best case scenario is a two-month process.
There will be a lot of debris to dispose of, and having been built in the 1920s, the structure of the stadium could include harmful substances, so further analysis is needed. Because of this, it is not yet possible to work out a cost on the stadium’s demolition.
