The expectations were relatively high when Silvano Vos arrived from Ajax in the summer, but the Dutchman has failed to deliver since. So, what happened to the Dutchman? Gazzetta dello Sport has taken a closer look.
Vos was one of seven summer signings ahead of the season, with Milan once again opting for a promising youth player, as also seen with the likes of Jan-Carlo Simic and Alex Jimenez. However, despite being mentioned as an option for the first team, he’s yet to make his debut.
As highlighted by Gazzetta dello Sport, the start was promising for Vos as Carpi manager Cristian Serpio labelled him – along with Jimenez – as ‘out of this category’ after the Milan Futuro debut. Indeed, he came on at half-time and delighted with plays as well as personal initiatives.
He won the penalty that was converted by Camarda, and then sent Jimenez through on goal – who missed the winning goal – and changed the face of the Rossoneri midfield with technique and physique.
“Today I have to say that I saw two players completely out of this category: Jimenez and Vos. I only saw the Dutchman for one half, it seems to me that he shouldn’t be in Serie C,” Serpi stated.
Half a season later, things haven’t exactly gone according to plan as Vos has failed to live up to the expectations. Was it the weight of Serpini’s words? Maybe. Was it the positive reactions on social media? Probably.
Since that game, the former Ajax man hasn’t made the difference. Not only in terms of numbers – zero goals and zero assists in 13 games – but also in terms of his performance. Starting ten out of 15 games, Vos is showing difficulties in adapting, especially tactically and not only that.
Indeed, the role is yet to be defined. Daniele Bonera has tried him as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, mezz’ala and left winger. Negative results, also due to some physical ailments. The boy has speed, vision, technique, and personality, but all of that has been missing since his debut.
Then there is the locker room issue. He still understands little Italian and the bond with his teammates isn’t particularly close.
Milan invested €5m in the player between the fixed fee and bonuses, also committing to a five-year contract. The project is long-term, and the difficulties of integration have been taken into account. However, more was expected. And Vos himself, before everyone else, knows it.
Especially seeing how Camarda, Jimenez, Liberali, Zeroli, Torriani and Bartesaghi have already received minutes from Fonseca. The Portuguese coach has also considered Vos: he has trained several times with the first team and he was called up for the match against Genoa. But Fonseca still doesn’t trust him.
With Bennacer out since the beginning of the season, and the various injuries in Milan’s midfield, it was only reasonable to expect a debut for the 19-year-old already. Instead, he will have to wait for his moment with Fonseca’s side.
Vos has 17 games behind him with Ajax, three of which in the Europa League. And the talent certainly hasn’t disappeared. Almost 1.90m in height, some compare him to Kessie for his ability to play in both phases.
