Despite having nothing to do with the reasoning, Sergio Conceicao has joined AC Milan in a time of ’emergency’, and there are only five months to fix things.
The decision to sack Paulo Fonseca came at a confusing time, and this has been one of the big talking points from Milanisti. Not only has half of the season been effectively wasted but now a new coach has been left with a difficult set of cards.
As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, time is ‘running out’ for the season to be mended. Conceicao must pick up thousands of crumbs if Milan are to dream of a top-four finish, which the paper suggests is still an attainable goal for the club.
Milanello is currently full of sickness, and ‘soulless’, so Conceicao is tasked with uplifting the squad, and perhaps the staff, if there is to be any success had this season.
Then, on the pitch there are several issues too. Paulo Fonseca’s promises of a ‘dominant’ Rossoneri never came to fruition, so his compatriot must work quickly to create a ‘beautiful’ team, something which will be aided by giving the side a new mental profile.
Milan often lacked identity under Fonseca, an emergency in itself, so this is one of the big things to cure. Players often spoke about misunderstandings in the system, which cannot occur once again under the new head coach.
Finally, Conceicao must recover his key players. Whilst Rafael Leao started to grow under Fonseca towards the end, other players struggled, and the biggest case of this was Theo Hernandez. Therefore, the former Porto head coach will be tasked with restarting the team, on an individual level too.
Conceicao walks into a Diavolo side where problems are evident and visible, and whether he can fix them will be shown at the end of the season.
