While Genoa did lose to Milan in the Serie A this week, the focus was on something entirely different. A banner was unveiled by the Genoa fans at the Gradinata Nord in their game against Milan which read “Away from Genoa A-Cap and fake Genoans”. The banner was clearly targeted at A-Cap, who are the main creditors of 777 Partners, a Miami based investment company which had bought the club in 2018. In December 2024, Genoa announced that Romanian businessman Dan Sucu had acquired a majority stake after a capital increase of 40 million euros ($42 million) for a 77% share. This was however challenged by A-Cap who maintained that they are still the owners, even though the board finalised the sale. Earlier this week, The Court of Genoa has dismissed an attempt by A-Cap to halt a takeover of the club by Sucu, to which the fans reacted through the banner. 777 Partners collapsed in late 2024, leaving behind the seven football clubs it owned in a desperate financial position with insurmountable debts. These were Genoa, Sevilla, Hertha Berlin, Vasco da Gama, Melbourne Victory and Standard Liege. They had to sell all the clubs, including Genoa who are the oldest football club in Italy.
