Gent have broken their transfer record with the signing of 19-year-old Swedish winger Momodou Sonko. The Swedish youth international has joined from Gothenburg side BK Häcken and cost around €8m, a record fee for Gent. During his time with Häcken Sonko won both the Swedish Allsvenskan and the Domestic Cup. He made 44 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists.
Sonko is a dual national and is also eligible to play for Gambia. He has signed a contract with the Buffaloes until 2028. He is a replacement for the recently departed Malick Fofana, who was signed by Lyon earlier in the transfer window. During Gent’s 2-2 draw with Westerlo at the weekend, it was clear that the Buffaloes were in need of some more creativity and wide players with a goal threat. Sonko appears to fit the bill well, and joins the likes of Daisuke Yokota and Franck Surdez as attacking signings this window. Both of the two new men impressed in patches at the weekend.
