L’Équipe are reporting that Marseille midfielder Gerson (25) has bid farewell to his teammates ahead of his return to his former club, Flamengo.
According to L’Équipe, Gerson’s Marseille career will be concluded soon. There is no longer any doubt that the Brazilian will return to South America. Yesterday, sources contacted by Get French Football News confirmed that discussions over a return were underway, and progress has quickly been made in those talks.
He will leave the club after just over a season. After being brought in by Jorge Sampaoli, Gerson was a key component of a well-performing side that finished second in Ligue 1 last season, securing Champions League football for this season. However, since the arrival of Igor Tudor this summer, the Brazilian midfielder has become a somewhat peripheral figure.
The exact contours of the deal are yet to be specified, and Marseille will continue to pay his salary until December. However, Gerson may not even be available for the final Ligue 1 gameweek before the World Cup. Marseille face Monaco on Sunday, but given that he has already said goodbye to his teammates, it now looks unlikely that he will feature in Tudor’s squad for the trip.
