Glasgow City announce Lisa Evans return on three-year deal | OneFootball

Glasgow City have announced the return of Lisa Evans, who has re-signed for her former club on a three-year deal.

The 32-year-old returns to familiar surroundings, having played for the SWPL powerhouse between 2008 and 2012. It was a fruitful spell for the 109-time capped Scottish international. Evans won four SWPL titles, two Scottish Cups and two SWPL Cups during her first Glasgow City spell.

From Glasgow, Evans began a five-year stint in Germany. Having caught the eye of Turbine Potsdam in a Champions League tie, she joined them in June 2012. She helped them finish as runners-up in the Frauen-Bundesliga, and the DFB-Pokal Frauen on two occasions. In June 2015, she joined rivals Bayern Munich. Evans won the 2015/16 Frauen-Bundesliga title and finished second the following season.

A move to the Women’s Super League followed when Arsenal came calling in June 2017. Evans started in their 2018 League Cup win over Manchester City and went on to win the WSL the following season. A loan move to West Ham in 2021 was made permanent at the end of the 2021/22 season, followed by a short stint with newly promoted Bristol City last season.

Returning to Scotland

Having made the move back north of the border, Evans was clearly delighted. She told the club website: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be back, it’s been a while and I know things have changed massively with the club but I’m really excited to be back.”

Evans’ sights seem firmly set on helping Glasgow City regain their SWPL crown, which they surrendered to Celtic last season.

“I’ve had a great playing career in Germany and down south and I felt like I owed it in some way to come back and to help Glasgow City get success again,” she admitted.

City’s head coach Leanne Ross said: “We are all excited to welcome Lisa back home to Glasgow City. Lisa’s quality, experience and versatility will be a major asset to the team for the season ahead. I am delighted Lisa has chosen to return to Glasgow City, I can’t wait to work with her once again and see the positive influence she can have on our players and environment.”

The City faithful will be hopeful that the return of a player of Evans’ calibre can help turn the tide with the traditional Old Firm of Celtic and Rangers playing an evermore prominent role in the league.
