Murray believes that Warne is a good manager and could be the man to bring the club back out of League One.

The coach was appointed in September by the new owners, ending his six year stint in charge of Rotherham United to take over at Pride Park.

The 39-year-old has claimed that the setup of the club will suit Warne, highlighting how young the current squad is as a big opportunity for any manager.

“He is a good manager indeed,” said Warne, via Derbyshire Live.

“This is a really exciting project for him here at Derby.

“We touched on it earlier that there are eight players under 22.

“That must be really exciting for him to mould this group.

“It’s a Premier League quality set up and he will want to try to take them back there.”

Warne has overseen the team’s recent rise up to 6th in the third division table ahead of this weekend’s clash with Portsmouth.

The two sides are level on points going into the game, with a win potentially moving the victor up to 4th before the rest of the league kicks-off over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Derby will visit Newport County for the second round of the FA Cup.

The Verdict

Warne has had a positive impact so far at Derby, with results recently showing the team’s play-off credentials.

Warne has experience earning promotion to the Championship, which is what he has been brought in to bring to the club.

A win on Friday night would be a big test of their competitiveness.

The January transfer window will also be quite interesting for Derby, as it will be Warne’s first chance to really shape the squad to his liking.
