RB Leipzig's Peter Gulácsi and David Zec of Holstein Kiel on the mend after collision

A horrific and accidental coming together between RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulácsi and Holstein Kiel's David Zec overshadowed the teams' Bundesliga encounter on Saturday, yet good news was to follow, with both players emerging from the incident bruised but unbroken.

Gulácsi came off the worst in the unfortunate collision with Zec in the 60th minute of the sides' Matchday 30 encounter, the incident bringing a shocked hush over the Red Bull Arena.

With medical staff from both teams racing on to treat the players, it soon emerged that the Leipzig goalkeeper would need a stretcher to leave the pitch, while Kiel's defender managed to make it to the sidelines on foot, if very dazed.

Die Roten Bullen's Hungary international was subsequently taken to hospital for further examination, with tests revealing he had suffered a concussion and an injured ear. Shaken, but unbowed, Gulácsi later appeared in a club post on X with a raised thumb from his hospital bed.

"Our number 1 sustained a concussion and an injury to his right ear in the match against Kiel;" the social media post read. "He is doing well considering the circumstances – but will remain in the hospital for another night for observation."

Speaking earlier in the day, Leipzig's sporting director, Marcel Schäfer, said, "The most important thing ... is that [Peter] gets better soon."

Meanwhile, Kiel coach Marcel Rapp said of his player, Zec: "David is in the locker room and is responsive. He has a concussion and was briefly unconscious; he's doing well so far."

The teams played out a 1-1 draw in Saxony, with Shuto Machino giving basement side Kiel a surprise lead before Benjamin Šeško levelled for the Champions League-chasing Red Bulls with just over a quarter of an hour of the game remaining.
