Bild reports that Hannover 96 have set their sights on bringing RB Leipzig left-back Marcel Halstenberg back to the club.

Hannover’s sporting director Marcus Mann has already contacted Halstenberg’s consultants over a move. Hannover had previously tried to lure the 31-year-old back in 2015 as well as last season. Halstenberg has spent most of this season on the bench for Leipzig so the prospect of more game time could be appealing.

The 31-year-old can imagine a move back to Hannover and Leipzig will not block any move, however, his contract expires in 2024 so could cost a transfer fee.

Halstenberg came through the Hannover Academy but never played for the first team. In 2011, he left to join Borussia Dortmund II, a two-year spell there then saw him join St Pauli, then in 2015 Halstenberg joined Leipzig for €3.5m.

The 31-year-old has only played 50% of Leipzig’s minutes this season with the majority of his appearances coming off of the bench. Halstenberg was trusted with a start in Leipzig’s 3-1 win against Bayern Munich at the weekend and produced a solid display.
