Genk fans, even before last night, are sick of the sight of Hans Vanaken. The star of Club Brugge scored the equaliser in the sides 1-1 at the Jan Breydal on Thursday night. Remarkably, this is the 17th goal that the midfielder has scored in 34 games against Genk during his career. Even more impressive is that this means that Vanaken has scored a goal in each of the previous five games he has played against Genk. So far this calender year the sides have faced each other four times, with Vanaken scoring in all four match-ups.
The 31-year-old’s 17 goals against Genk is the most he has scored against a single Belgian club. Anderlecht are behind with Vanaken having grabbed 13 goals in 36 games, while Gent have seen him score 10 goals in 36. The Belgian international is closing in on 120 goals for Club Brugge, with just one more needed to reach the milestone. Vanaken has played an incredible 404 games for Club Brugge, with 86 assists alongside the goals. The Club Brugge captain is hoping to add a sixth Belgian title to his trophy cabinet at the end of this season.
