Despite their mid-season hiccup in La Liga, Barcelona have well and truly proven to be one of Europe’s elite teams this season by all measures.

Indeed, they may have slipped up and lost ground in La Liga but the fact of the matter remains that they have been stunning in knockout matches to date across competitions.

In fact, it is not only Barcelona but a general feature of most teams Hansi Flick has led, for the German tactician’s run in do-or-die games as a manager is wonderful as they gear up to take on Valencia in the Copa del Rey this week.

A stunning record

Flick has overseen 28 knockout games in his overall career as a manager and has won on 22 of those occasions, effectively securing a 79% win rate.

He began his managerial career at Hoffenheim and won four of the eight knockout games he oversaw for the team. In his next stint as head coach, he won 14 of the 16 games he oversaw for Bayern Munich and led them to a historic sextuple.

So far at Barcelona, he has overseen four knockout games and has won all four – namely against Barbastro and Real Betis in the Copa del Rey and Athletic Club and Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.

Later this week, he takes on Valencia at the Mestalla in the quarterfinal of the Copa de Rey and a win on the night will secure his team a spot in the final four. Needless to say, he will be looking to keep up his 100% record.

With the UEFA Champions League also reaching its knockout stage, Barcelona will have regular do-or-die match situations from here on and one hopes Flick and keep up his record.

Notably, Xavi Hernandez won 60% of the knockout games he oversaw as Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman won 67%, and Luis Enrique 89%.

The legendary Pep Guardiola, during his time at the club, won 90% of the knockout games faced.
