Mohamed Salah’s recent contract extension with Liverpool has reignited debate among supporters and pundits alike about the Egyptian’s long-term legacy at the club. On the Daily Red podcast from Anfield Index, host Dave Hendrick delivered a numbers-heavy, evidence-backed assessment of Salah’s record-breaking trajectory—and made the bold claim that Ian Rush’s legendary goal tally is “in play”.
With 243 goals already in a Liverpool shirt, Salah sits third in the club’s all-time scorers list, behind only Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346). But Hendrick firmly believes the door remains open for Salah to reach the summit.
“Let’s say he can do the same next year and gets 30-plus goals,” Hendrick posited. “And let’s say the following season there is a bit of a drop-off and he lands at 25, 20. That’s 50 plus the remainder of this season. There is a real possibility that at the end of this contract… Mo is 40, 45, less than 50 goals behind Ian Rush.”
And the motivation? Hendrick doesn’t doubt it: “We know he has an obsession with numbers and records and statistics.”
What sets Salah apart is not just talent, but remarkable consistency. “Four of the last five seasons—30 or more goals,” Hendrick highlighted. “It’s not like he’s put up a 50 and a 45 and a 60. He’s not doing what Cristiano and Messi were doing. He’s putting up a consistent level.”

Even Salah’s so-called “down” seasons make headlines. “That 25 includes AFCON, an injury, and the worst run of form we’ve seen Mo have in a red shirt,” Hendrick reminded listeners, yet it still ranks among elite-level returns.
Beyond goals, Salah’s creative contributions place him among the Premier League’s finest. He currently sits 10th in all-time assists with 86. “It’s a certainty that he would pass Steven Gerrard, David Silva, Dennis Bergkamp,” said Hendrick. “If he adds 20 more over the next two years, he’d be fourth all-time.”
At Liverpool specifically, Salah is poised to surpass Steven Gerrard’s Premier League assist record of 92, with 85 already to his name. In all competitions, he currently ranks sixth with 109, and could well reach the top three by overtaking Ian Callaghan (130) and Billy Liddell (132).

Salah already holds one of the most impressive records in the Premier League era: “Third all-time for the most goal involvements for a single side in the Premier League,” Hendrick noted, trailing only Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs. With 267 involvements in 281 appearances, Salah is doing what others achieved in hundreds more games.
Even the previously unthinkable now feels tangible. “Rush’s record is in play for Mo,” Hendrick asserted. “It might take him staying until he’s aged 37 or 38… maybe breaking it as a squad player.”
And if Salah does fall short of Rush’s 346? Hendrick still believes he’ll end his Anfield career among the pantheon. “Second all-time in goals for Liverpool? Very possible. Top three for assists? Likely. Premier League top three scorer and assister? Absolutely.”
The contract is signed. The fire is burning. The record books are wide open.
