SSV Jahn Regensburg keeper Felix Gebhardt and Hertha BSC attacker Derry Scherhant have both earned late nominations to Antonio di Salvo’s current Germany U21 squad. The two players head to di Salvo’s camp after three professionals – Jonas Urbig (FC Bayern Munich), Paul Wanner (FC Heidenheim), and Jens Castrop (FC Nürnberg) had to depart injured.

Urbig – who has had his struggles in his recent unexpected turn in Bayern’s net – started the last three U21 fixtures. The loss nevertheless barely counts as relevant given that SC Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu can easily reprise his role as di Salvo’s #1. Atubolu recently set a new record for his hometown club and has been in scintillating form for the Breisgauer.

Both Gebhardt and Scherant have not yet been capped at Germany’s highest youth level, though they have been called up before. Three other players in di Salvo’s current squad (Nürnberg’s Caspar Jander, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Lukas Ulrich, and SpVgg Greuther Fürth’s Joshua Quarshie) may also make their first U21 appearances in this week’s friendlies.
