Spurs skipper Heung-min Son is aiming to “change the history” at Tottenham by lifting the Europa League on Wednesday night.

Tottenham take on fellow Premier League strugglers Manchester United in Bilbao with a place in next season’s Champions League also at stake.

It would be the first trophy Son will have won with the club in his ten years at Tottenham, and says winning it could be transformative.

“It would be a historical moment,” Son said.

“Obviously I’ve stayed here ten years and I just wanted to win a trophy, which no one has done in that ten years.

“It’s going to be a massive day for the club first of all and for the boys, and obviously for me as well.

“The first step is always the hardest. If we can win that trophy, we can change the mentality, we can change the history and we can continue to compete for other trophies.”

Son has recently returned from a foot injury which forced him to miss several weeks but insists he is completely ready.

“I’m ready,” he said. “I’m back from injury. It was my first game against Crystal Palace and afterwards I played against Villa around 70 minutes. I didn’t expect to play that long but I was managing to play.

“Physically I’m ready to go and also the boys are ready to go for the biggest game of the season.”

Son, 32, enters the last year of his Tottenham contract next season but says he is not thinking about this as his last chance to lift a trophy with the club.

“In the future, you never know,” he said. “We might play next year in the Champions League or we might play in a final, we never know.

“But the chance that I have now is real. It’s a fact. Tomorrow is the Europa League final so I’m not thinking about anything else.

“This could be my last chance or this could be another chance. I just want to concentrate about tomorrow and on winning and lifting the trophy with the boys to celebrate together.”
