The player in question? Eduardo Camavinga.

Frenchman Camavinga, for his part, was forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off last night, as Real Madrid made the short trip across Spain’s capital for a Champions League showdown with Atlético.

The 22-year-old had been heavily criticised for his recent performances in the buildup to the clash, with 39-year-old Luka Modrić having therefore been given the nod for the derby.

Camavinga, though, picked the ideal outing to recover his form.

Introduced off the bench at the Metropolitano, the former Stade Rennais talent shone bright, adding some much-needed control to Real’s midfield on both sides of the ball.

Speaking to the media post-match, the topic of Camavinga’s performance was therefore put to manager Carlo Ancelotti.

And the Italian tactician was characteristically honest in his response, explaining:

“Camavinga? His level was low lately but he’s back now. And he chose the toughest game.”
