Following Hoffenheim's embarrassing 0-4 home defeat to Union Berlin last weekend, midfielder Dennis Geiger lashed out at the club's transfer spending.

“We have spent €90 million. And what are we, fourth from last? Of course, that doesn't live up to expectations.”

Hoffenheim chairman Markus Schütz has now hit back at Geiger, telling the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung that he expects the players "not to come up with cheap alibis after such a weak performance as against Union Berlin".

He also pointed out that, apart from the fact that "the estimate of the total fee is wrong", eight players from last season's squad started against Union Berlin.

Dennis Geiger is not the only Hoffenheim player who has been publicly critical of the club's management.

“We invest so much money for nothing. At the moment, there is a danger that we will get relegated with a squad with good players, but obviously nothing is working. Something's changed at the club."

Hoffenheim will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they visit Werder Bremen on Sunday.
