When Derby County opted to sign Omar Mascarell on loan from Real Madrid in 2014, they were hoping to secure promotion to the Premier League with the midfielder in their side.
Having suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers in the Championship play-off final, the Rams were expected to launch a push for a top-two finish in the following campaign.
However, due to a lack of consistency, the Rams finished eighth in the Championship standings.
Mascarell missed the closing stages of the season due to injury.
Before picking up an issue with his foot, the midfielder showed some signs of promise in the 23 appearances that made in the second-tier.
The Rams faltered in Mascarell’s absence as they only won two of their final 10 league games.
Here, we have decided to take a look at how the former Derby man is getting on these days….
Following his temporary spell with the Rams, Mascarell was loaned out again by Los Blancos before making a permanent exit from the club in 2016.
The Spaniard sealed a move to Eintracht Frankfurt and went on to feature on 45 occasions for the club in all competitions before joining fellow German outfit FC Schalke 04 in 2018.
Over the course of a three-year spell with Die Knappen, Mascarell experienced a rollercoaster of emotions.
After representing the club in the Champions League during the 2018/19 campaign, the midfielder was part of the squad which suffered relegation to the 2.Bundesliga last year.
After briefly becoming a free-agent, Mascarell sealed a move to Elche.
In his debut season with the Spanish side, the 29-year-old represented the club on 32 occasions in La Liga as they secured a 13th-place finish in the standings.
During the current campaign, Mascarell has played five times for Elche.
Having missed the club’s recent defeat to Barcelona due to injury, the midfielder is currently on the road to recovery and could be fit enough to feature in his side’s showdown with Rayo Vallecano on October 3rd.
