Jan Siewert had a difficult task when he took over as Huddersfield Town manager in 2019.

Not only did he have to attempt to keep the Terriers in the Premier League from an awful position mid-campaign, but he was also stepping into the shoes of a club hero in David Wagner.

Replacing the German was never going to be easy, but Siewert did not last long in his attempts to do so.

The now 40-year old only took charge of 19 games with the club, winning just once before his dismissal.

Despite taking over in February 2019 with a contract to the summer of 2021, Siewert and Huddersfield parted ways by August of that year.

It wouldn’t be until the following year that he would make his return to football in a management role.

He took over as part of the academy at Mainz, working as the Academy manager.

The former midfielder did step up into the role of head coach of the first team squad in December 2020, but he only oversaw one game during the club’s search for a full-time appointment.

Siewert remains with the Bundesliga outfit to this day, having moved on from his doomed stint in charge of Huddersfield.

A number of players have emerged as potential first team calibre players from Mainz’s academy during his time in charge of the system.

That includes the likes of Paul Nebel and Niklas Taier, who have gone on to make 18 and 14 Bundesliga appearances over the last couple of seasons.

It remains to be seen whether Siewert will make a return to coaching at a senior level having had his best success working with underage players at Dortmund and now Mainz.

His coaching career is still very much in its infancy so perhaps a return to English football could even be on the cards someday.
