Milan’s decision to sack coach Paulo Fonseca after their 1-1 home draw against Roma came with precise timing, allowing the club to pay just a third of what they would’ve owed the manager by firing him a few weeks later.
The Portuguese boss had a contract with the Rossoneri running until the summer of 2027, but recent reports claimed that the deal also included a clause permitting Milan to pay him only one year’s salary in case he was sacked within the opening six months of his stint.

As a result, Calciomercato.com explains that the club will spend around €5m gross for the coach’s tenure, an expense that could’ve risen to €15m gross if the sacking had come after Fonseca’s first six months unless he decided to sign for another club.
Former Porto manager Sergio Conceição has been chosen as his compatriot’s replacement, as he is expected to sign a six-month contract worth €1m, in a deal that reportedly includes an option for a further campaign, too.
