Derby had made a decent start to life back in the Championship after their promotion from League One last season, but their form has declined significantly in recent weeks, and they suffered their seventh consecutive defeat as they were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield United at Pride Park on Saturday.

Despite giving Warne the entirety of the January transfer window, owner David Clowes has now decided to take action, with the 51-year-old's dismissal coming just 24 hours before Saturday's game at Norwich City, and he departs with the Rams sitting 22nd in the table, two points from safety.

Warne made the move from Rotherham United to take over at Pride Park in September 2022, replacing interim manager Liam Rosenior, who had been in charge since Wayne Rooney's resignation in the summer.

Given that Warne had won three promotions from League One during his time at the New York Stadium, Clowes believed that he was the right man to lead the club back to the Championship, but his first season ended in disappointment as Derby missed out on the play-offs on the final day of the campaign.

Warne came under pressure from supporters after a poor start to last season, but he was able to turn his side's fortunes around, and the Rams achieved automatic promotion as they finished in second place behind champions Portsmouth.

Derby made a promising start to this season in the Championship, winning three of their first five games, but they have plummeted down the table after an alarming run of form during the past few months, and that has resulted in Warne's sacking.

In total, Warne won 60, drew 27 and lost 45 of his 132 games in charge of the Rams, giving him a win percentage of 45.5%, and that compares favourably with his predecessors.

It is fair to say that Warne never truly won over Derby supporters, with his style of play often coming in for criticism, but there are actually only three managers with a higher win percentage than him in the club's history.

Only including permanent managers, Steve McClaren has the best record of any Rams boss after winning 51, drawing 22 and losing 22 of his 94 games in charge during his first spell at Pride Park between September 2013 and May 2015, which gives him a win percentage of 54.3%.

Darren Wassall, who had a three-month stint as Derby manager following the sacking of Paul Clement in February 2016, is next on the list with a 50% win percentage, having won nine, drawn three and lost six of his 18 games in charge.

The only other manager with a better record than Warne is the legendary Brian Clough, who won 97, drew 51 and lost 63 of his 211 games during his spell in charge of the Rams between June 1967 and October 1973, giving him a win percentage of 46.7%.

Warne may not be remembered as the most popular of Derby managers, but his contribution in leading the club back to the Championship should not go underappreciated, and history may look back more fondly on his tenure given his impressive win record.
