There could still be nine teams from Serie A in UEFA competitions next season, including five in the Champions League.

As today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, note, this would be contingent on Lazio and Fiorentina winning their respective cup competitions this campaign.

This season, Serie A had five teams representing it in the Champions League.

The Italian top flight was one of two leagues, along with the Bundesliga, to have five teams qualify directly from the league.

That is exceedingly unlikely to be the case next season, however.

Italian teams have broadly not had a positive season in Europe. And particularly the Champions League.

Inter Milan have made it to the quarterfinal stage of that competition. They take on Bayern Munich in a two-legged tie this month.

However, the likes of AC Milan and Juventus suffered shock eliminations at the hands of Feyenoord and PSV respectively.

There is nevertheless the possibility that five teams from Serie A could play in the Champions League next season.

That would occur if Lazio are to win the Europa League but not finish in the top four of the Serie A table.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina could still qualify for the Europa League, regardless of where they finish in the league table.

That would be the case in the event that La Viola win the Europa Conference League this campaign.
