Huddersfield Town fans will have enjoyed Delano Burgzorg's goalscoring exploits against Leeds United for Middlesbrough

Leeds United suffered a 3-0 EFL Cup defeat on home soil at the hands of Middlesbrough, and Football League supporters up and down the country will have been surprised to see a strong Whites team knocked out of the competition in emphatic circumstances in the first round despite eight changes.

Meanwhile, Boro will be delighted with such a heavy victory on away soil, and have been rewarded with a home tie against Stoke City next round, courtesy of their goals from Anfernee Dijksteel, Delano Burgzorg and academy product Josh Coburn.

Due to their relegation to League One at the end of last term, Huddersfield Town will not be facing West Yorkshire rivals Leeds, unless they are drawn against each other in the FA Cup come January - if the Terriers are able to reach round three, of course.

However, the rivalry between the two sides is still very much alive, and Terriers supporters will have been pleased to see the Whites fall to a 3-0 defeat to Boro.

Furthermore, the John Smith's Stadium faithful will enjoy the fact that their side have already got further than the Whites in this season's EFL Cup, following a 3-0 victory over Morecambe on Tuesday night.

Terriers fans will also have loved the sight of their club's former player, Burgzorg, scoring at Elland Road as their West Yorkshire rivals were dumped out of the EFL Cup in round one.

The former Mainz man spent just one year with the Terriers, and managed to score seven goals as well as providing two assists in the Championship last season, despite the club's relegation from the second tier.

Burgzorg's most memorable game in Town colours came last Boxing Day, as he assisted Sorba Thomas before scoring a goal of his own during a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

And despite the fact he has now left the John Smith's Stadium, he has still found a way of providing Terriers fans with a joyful moment by scoring against the Whites.

Boro fans will hope Burgzorg's goal is a sign of things to come

While the Dutch forward arguably did well to score seven Championship goals for a Terriers side who accumulated just 45 points in the second tier last season, Boro will hope that the 25-year-old can find himself on the scoresheet more often this term amid their hunt for a play-off spot.

Michael Carrick and co will be buoyed by the fact that Burgzorg managed to score in only his second appearance, and first start, for the Riverside Stadium outfit, and will hope that it is a sign of things to come.

Fellow striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, who was Boro's top scorer in the Championship last season with 16 goals, will undoubtedly remain the main goalscorer in Carrick's team, but despite his efforts, the Teessiders failed to land a play-off spot.

But if Burgzorg can also contribute with a better tally than that of his Terriers return last campaign, then he can help boost Boro's top-six credentials.

Meanwhile, Boro fans will have enjoyed seeing academy product Coburn score against the Whites on Wednesday, and he is another attacker who can support Latte Lath's goalscoring exploits if he is able to hit form.
