Fan says Huddersfield won’t regret Josh Koroma’s exit: “No hard feelings – good luck to him – but his time here has come to an end for a reason."

At first glance, Josh Koroma's departure from Huddersfield Town may seem a perplexing scenario. However, when asked whether Huddersfield will regret the decision to let the forward leave on a free transfer, FLW's Terriers Fan Pundit Graeme Rayner believes that Koroma's departure isn't one that Town are likely to rue.

Huddersfield Town: Josh Koroma exit not a loss

While Koroma's 11 goals in League One equalled his most prolific campaign since 2018/19, when he hit the same tally for Leyton Orient to earn his move to Huddersfield, Graeme believes that the numbers don't tell the full story.

"I don't think that we will regret the decision to let Josh Koroma leave," he told FLW.

"Yes, he scored 11 goals. However, he is someone who I think is woefully inconsistent and while he got 11 goals, he should have scored significantly more, in my opinion."

He also pointed to a familiar complaint from the fanbase.

"There is a feeling among Town fans that he only plays well, and with any consistency, when his contract is up for renewal."

Koroma's career: Hot streaks but little evolution

Over five years at Huddersfield, Koroma made 169 appearances, scoring 35 goals and providing 10 assists. But many fans feel that the wide man has never developed beyond a one-dimensional threat.

"For someone who plays out wide, he only really seems to have one method: cut inside and shoot," Graeme said.

"Very rarely is he able to cross a ball meaningfully. At times he gets into a position where he can whip in an early cross, and instead checks back onto his right foot, killing the momentum."

His career stats across all clubs, per FotMob, show flashes of quality, but also suggest a player who hasn't taken the next step.

Terriers enter rebuild mode after clear-out

With 18 players released, Huddersfield's decision to let Koroma depart alongside several other experienced players reflects a shift in direction. In a club statement, the Terriers explained the motivation behind the sweeping changes: "Conducting a full review of our footballing operations following the 2024/25 campaign, the club retains a desire to refresh the complexion of our first-team squad... Looking to head into the 2025/26 season reinvigorated, decisions have been made to allow full flexibility and freedom to any incoming head coach."

It's a high-risk, high-reward strategy, and losing a goalscorer in Koroma only raises the stakes.

Still, Graeme sees it as a necessary move.

"I think he is not quite the player that we need. I would rather we free up the wage and the squad space for someone new and maybe a bit more exciting," he said.

Concluding, he added: "No hard feelings. Good luck to him. But, his time here has come to an end for a reason, I think."
