FC Barcelona started the season very well under Hansi Flick with the German coach getting his side to play an exciting and attacking brand of football. Until the end of October, the Catalan club was scoring goals for fun and winning games by significant margins.
However, things have stalled considerably since November. While the chance creation is still at a very high level, one thing that has let Barcelona down in recent times is their failure to put away chances and a general lack of goalscoring.
Hansi Flick will be hoping that his side can return to their previous form soon and he will need all the players in the squad, especially the senior ones to step up in the second half of the campaign. Among those players is Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfield star has hardly showcased a high level since his return from injury and is slowly yet surely losing prominence at the club. His performances coupled with the fact that his contract expires in 2026 and he is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal has put a target on his back among the Barcelona fans.
De Jong has now come out in a candid interview with Voetbal as quoted by Mundo Deportivo where he has spoken on an array of topics. Among those, the 27-year-old has revealed that he is disappointed with the number of trophies he has won with Barcelona so far. He said:
“I have to admit that when I signed for Barcelona, I didn’t imagine I would only win 1 La Liga, 1 Copa del Rey, and 1 Spanish Super Cup after 4 years. I expected at least double that, so it’s disappointing. Things happen beyond your control, and you can’t predict them.”
Back when De Jong signed for Barcelona, they were considered one of the best clubs in the world from a sporting sense and had the best player – Lionel Messi at their disposal. Since then, however, things have not been plain-sailing.
The club has been forced to grapple with financial issues and is not out of the woods as of today, still facing registration issues with La Liga. The fact that they have managed to be relevant in this period is a testament to the talent at the club.
Should Frenkie sign a new contract and stay at the club for a long period of time, he could realize his dream of winning more trophies with Barcelona. Let’s wait and see how it plays out in the coming months and years.
