It is always a demanding ask for any player, especially at a club like FC Barcelona, to watch on from the bench. After all, there are only eleven places to fill when the game kicks off. Still, therein lies the true test of patience and resilience for any Barcelona player.
While all the stars and aspiring players at the Catalan club undoubtedly have a lot of quality, some players are simply better suited for certain tactics or managers. Moreover, others manage to pick up a good enough form to keep challenging players away from the starting eleven.
Such is arguably the case for the goalkeeping position at the moment, where Inaki Peña’s recent displays have made him a regular for Hansi Flick. Unfortunately, that has meant that Wojciech Szczesny has still been kept from making his official debut since joining the club mid-season.
Now, ahead of the clash against Atletico Madrid, in an interview with Eleven Sports (h/t Barca Times), Szczesny has revealed that he remains clueless about when exactly he will get to make his official debut:
“You know what, I don’t know. I told you from the beginning that first I have to get back to full fitness and that was the most important thing. Now I feel completely ready to play both physically and mentally.”
However, the Polish goalkeeper also admitted that if he was the coach of the club, he would also continue to keep entrusting the current Spanish starter in goal:
“But I also don’t hide the fact that if I were the coach of this club, I would play the same number of matches as I have played so far, so it’s hard for me to be frustrated with this situation because I agree with it 100%.”
While the situation may be difficult for the formerly retired Pole, it seems that he has a mature enough mindset to take one for the team. He continues to work hard and diligently, and perhaps his chance to debut could come in some sort of a cup tie, possibly in the Copa del Rey.
