Ange Postecoglou has hit back at the reaction to his comments claiming he always wins a trophy in his second season.

After a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday, Postecoglou remarked that he always wins trophies in his second season.

Tottenham are back in action on Wednesday when they play Championship side Coventry in the Carabao Cup third round, one of four trophies Spurs can get their hands on this season.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Postecoglou said. “I just stated a fact and it seems like, am I supposed to just lie or just say it never happened?

“It’s just confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to answer something that is true.

“If I don’t win it in the second year this year and I come out next year and say ‘well, I always win it’, well, no, actually it’s not true, but I’ve just said something that’s true, and it seems like it’s upset a lot of people for some reason.

“But do you really think it’s me boasting. How am I supposed to answer something that’s true. Is it to say ‘well, actually, no, it wasn’t that important, they were easy competitions and they don’t mean anything’.

“If you’ve achieved something, aren’t you supposed to say ‘ yes, I have, and that’s what I hope to do again’? I’m not really sure why people misconstrue it as me trying to boast about something.

“I’ve answered a question which is true. That’s always happened and my plan is for it to happen again this year.

“And if it doesn’t happen, then I can’t answer that question in the same way next year, I can say ‘mostly’ not ‘always’.”

Previously, Postecoglou had said during pre-season that he “usually” wins trophies in his second season.

Following Sunday’s defeat, he doubled down on those remarks and told Sky Sports: “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed. I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

He won league titles in his second season in charge of South Melbourne (1997/98), Brisbane Roar (2010/11) and Japanese team Yokohama F Marinos (2019), also winning cup competitions.

He won back-to-back titles with Celtic prior to joining Spurs, and is now hoping to bring silverware to north London, something he firmly believes he can do.
