Enzo Maresca dropped a hint of the future of Carney Chukwuemeka saying it’s important the midfielder plays games but he’s unsure if that will happen at Chelsea.

Chukwuemeka joined the Blues in a deal worth around £20m from Aston Villa in 2022, but his time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injury issues.

Despite showing glimpses of the talent he has the 20-year-old has made just 27 appearances during his two seasons at the club, and his future has been questioned this summer.

Maresca drops hint on Chukwuemeka future

Chukwuemeka started Chelsea’s first two games of pre-season but hasn’t featured for the club since and was left out of the match day squad for the 2-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday.

It was reported earlier this summer the midfielder has a release clause of £40m and it’s thought he was attracting interest from AC Milan, but nothing has materialised in regards to a move to the Italian giants.

Recent reports have linked Chukwuemeka with a move to Crystal Palace, and it appears clear his future perhaps lies away from the club.

Chukwuemeka is facing an uncertain future at Chelsea.

Maresca was asked about Chukwuemeka’s future after the game and described him as a very good player, but admitted he wasn’t sure if he would get the games he needs at Chelsea.

“I think every case is different,” he told his post match press conference.

“Carney, I think he is a very good player. The problem is, because of some injuries in the past, I think the best for him is to play 30 or 35 games in a row, to show himself that he is fit and how good he is because he is very good.

“With us, is he going to play 35 games? I’m not sure.”

It remains to be seen what happens with Chukwuemeka but Chelsea are set for a busy end to the window as they work on deals for Joao Felix and Victor Osimhen, whilst they also need to offload a number of players.
