Wataru Endo’s tenure at Liverpool has been marked by a series of highs and lows, reflecting both his personal growth and the evolving dynamics of the team. In a candid revelation to the Premier League’s Uncut series, Endo credits his childhood inspiration, Javier Mascherano, for shaping his approach to football, a sentiment that resonates deeply with fans and pundits alike.
Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo’s journey to Anfield is a tale of perseverance and admiration for the greats who preceded him. Among those greats, former Red Javier Mascherano stands out as a significant figure in Endo’s development as a player. Mascherano, renowned for his tenacity and versatility, played a pivotal role during his stint at Liverpool from 2007 to 2010.
Endo, speaking about his idols, stated, “Mascherano. He played as a six but also played as a defender. He’s not tall, but he could play both midfielder and centre-back. I was a defender when I was a boy and I was not tall as a centre-back, so I watched his game a lot.” His admiration for Mascherano’s ability to excel in multiple roles despite physical limitations evidently shaped his own playing style.
Transitioning to the Premier League has been both a dream realized and a challenge met for Endo. Reflecting on his experience, he shared, “For me, it’s like a dream came true [to be playing in the Premier League]. I watched Premier League games a lot when I was a boy, and I always dreamed that I want to be a Premier League player.”
His tactical approach, emphasizing simplicity and awareness, underscores the adaptability required in England’s top flight. “Especially midfielders have to take a good position, always try to be between the opponent and also scanning – you have to see, look around before you get the ball. I just try to play simple. If I feel pressure, just play it back to the defenders. I think a midfielder has to play with one or two touches, very simple,” Endo explained.

Despite a promising start under Jurgen Klopp, Endo has found opportunities harder to come by this season, with competitors like Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones ahead in the pecking order. However, his commitment remains unwavering, ready to contribute whenever the team calls upon him. His adaptability and dedication, reminiscent of Mascherano’s days at the club, continue to endear him to the Liverpool faithful.
Wataru Endo’s narrative is one of admiration turned aspiration. As Liverpool navigates a transitional phase under Arne Slot, Endo’s respect for the club’s past glories, personified by his reverence for Javier Mascherano, is particularly poignant. Although he isn’t the first name on the team sheet, his mentality and versatility make him an invaluable squad player.
Endo’s situation is reflective of Liverpool’s current season—transitional but hopeful. His journey from watching Mascherano to embodying his spirit on the same pitch is a full-circle moment for any player, let alone one from halfway across the world. As Liverpool fans, it’s our role to support players like Endo who respect and aspire to the club’s illustrious history, ensuring the ethos of Liverpool Football Club lives on.
