Watford could face a battle to keep hold of Kwadwo Baah in the summer after Wolfsburg showed an interest in the attacker.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Kwadwo Baah has been told to stick with Watford for at least one more season after it was revealed that Wolfsburg were keen on the attacker.
It has been a mixed campaign so far for the Hornets, with Tom Cleverley’s side currently 12th in the table, although they are just three points away from the play-off places.
However, there’s no doubt that Baah’s emergence has been a real positive, with the 22-year-old enjoying a breakthrough season.
Such form appears to have caught the eye, as Fabrizio Romano claimed that Wolfsburg were tracking Baah ahead of the transfer deadline on Monday, even though he is expected to be out for the next few months.
Naturally, that will worry some Watford fans, as the chance to move to the Bundesliga is sure to appeal, and there will be a concern that Wolfsburg could reignite their interest in the summer.
Yet, when asked about the prospect of losing Baah, FLW's Watford fan pundit Justin Beattie explained that the player could benefit from another 12 months with Watford, as he insists the youngster is among the most valuable players at the club.
“Baah has been one of the players that has impressed most at Vicarage Road this season. He is the sort of player that can spark a game and create goals. At the moment he is injured, so we are missing him in the team.
“I don’t know whether Wolfsburg will come back for him in the summer. I would think that he would need another season with Watford, as this is his first year at this level, so I would be surprised if he went anywhere in the summer.
“In regard to the price tag, it’s never easy to say. But, I would think he is one of the more sellable assets at Vicarage Road, so whatever our top talent is going for these days, he could certainly be considered one of those.”
This has been a very positive season for Baah, and it’s a shame for both the player and the club that he is set for a spell out now, as he is an important figure in Cleverley’s XI.
Given his talent and potential, the interest in Baah is understandable, and Watford will know that they are going to struggle to keep hold of him for the long-term.
But, if they have ambitions of reaching the Premier League, he is the sort of player that they should try to build around, and it's admirable that they considered Baah 'non-transferable' in the winter window.
Promotion to the top-flight can’t be ruled out this season, but, even if the Hornets remain in the Championship, as seems more likely, then Baah should still look to stick around for another year, as suggested above.
At this stage of his career, as he continues to improve, it’s pivotal that Baah plays week in, week out, and that will happen for him at Vicarage Road.
