Don Goodman believes there are two factors behind whether Daniel Farke’s long-term future lies at Leeds United or not.

The German is in his second season at Elland Road, and is hoping to deliver promotion to the Premier League.

He previously guided Norwich City to the top flight on two separate occasions, winning the Championship title both times.

The 48-year-old has a contract with Leeds until the summer of 2027, with his side sitting in an automatic promotion place as we approach the end of the March international break.

Goodman believes Farke’s future at Leeds will depend on both promotion, and just how competitive he can make the team in the Premier League.

He expects the coach to have a better attempt at survival in the top flight at Elland Road compared to when he was with the Canaries, highlighting a lack of recruitment in the past as a stumbling block to his success.

“I guess the answer to that will depend very much on a: him getting Leeds United to the Premier League and b: Leeds United under his tenure in the Premier League making a really good fist of being competitive,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“Felt for him when he was at Norwich, got them up not once but twice.

“The first time in particular, barely any money was spent on strengthening the Norwich squad, he never stood a chance of keeping them in the league.

“And possibly the second time, although a bit of money was spent, it didn’t appear to be spent wisely, and you don’t know how much input Daniel Farke had in that.

“What I would expect if Leeds do get into the Premier League, it will be his best chance at making a fist of surviving, because I do believe Leeds will have more money to spend than Norwich did when they got promoted under him.

“And therefore that will give them a better opportunity to strengthen and compete in the Premier League, which I, for one, hope Leeds United can do.”

Leeds are currently top of the Championship table, two points clear of third place Burnley.

Next season will be a huge opportunity for Farke

A lot of people are still sceptical of Farke’s ability to manage in the Premier League given how things went for him with Norwich.

This chance with Leeds, if they’re promoted, is a great opportunity to prove those people wrong.

He won’t get a better chance at making it work in the Premier League than with Leeds, who should have the resources to back him in the summer.

But we’ve seen the promoted sides all struggle in the last two years, so the Whites will be up against it in the top flight no matter how much they invest in the team.
