I would love to buy Keith Downie a pint

Here in the North East region we are lucky enough to have one of the most plausible and well-informed football reporters, in the shape of Keith Downie of Sky Sports.

I have always had time for people with the common touch who will go that extra yard, even if it means giving up their own time to engage with supporters.

Keith Downie is a proud scotsman and a supporter of Heart of Midlothian.

I have a soft spot for the Jambos because after my brother had helped form the ‘Mike Ashley Out Campaign’, we were invited up to Tynecastle by members of the ‘Foundation of Hearts’.

These men and women had successfully got rid of their own rotten owner and with the help of businesswoman Ann Budge, achieved their aim of having fan ownership.

Keith began covering the North East for Sky during Mike Ashley’s tenure and knows all about our previous trials and tribulations, heartache, and misery.

I think this is why he has developed a bit of a soft spot for Newcastle United himself.

This doesn’t sit well with some supporters of certain other clubs and there have been accusations of bias.

With Newcastle United riding high in the EPL again, we obviously get a lot more coverage in the mainstream media. This basically puts Keith Downie on a hiding to nothing when it comes to pleasing everybody, even though he is just carrying out the requirements of his employers.

The name of most games when it comes to big business and making real money is supply and demand, giving the majority of the public what they want, when they want it.

Suppose a man like Keith Downie sometimes shows emotion when doing his job (as was witnessed when he covered the scenes during and after our takeover on 7 October 2021). In that case, it means that he is passionate in what he is doing and representing. He shouldn’t be castigated and ridiculed by a minority who support another club.

With all of the unscrupulous vultures in the press and the media repeatedly trying to undermine Newcastle United, it is refreshing to see and hear journalists such as George Caulkin, Henry Winter, and of course Keith Downie, putting down a positive take on what is actually happening.

In a ruthless industry, nice guys often fall by the wayside, but it’s good to see Keith Downie getting on and obviously enjoying every minute in his current career vocation.

Like I mentioned earlier, he seems to have time for anybody and I would love to buy him a few pints, so Keith, I look forward to standing you a few down at the Fat Ox in Whitley Bay, or Tynemouth club, your choice.
