Danny Rohl is one of the most sought after managers in Europe - Sheffield Wednesday must consider potential replacements

Danny Rohl appears to be the Championship’s most in-demand manager, with the Sheffield Wednesday boss linked to both Southampton and Leicester City in recent weeks.

Aside from the financial muscle Leicester and Southampton have over Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl’s deteriorated relationship with Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri could also push the German towards the exit door.

With Wednesday safe from relegation and unlikely to sneak into the play-offs, attention turns to next season’s Championship – with potentially a new manager in charge.

Fabio Pecchia

Whilst murmurings of Rohl’s departure to either Southampton or Leicester City have rumbled on for some time now, the recent headlines at Hillsborough had been dominated by a potential embargo for the next three transfer windows.

That is because owner Dejphon Chansiri initially failed to pay all of the player’s wages for March, but has since managed to find the required money.

It is not the first time during Chansiri’s reign Wednesday have failed to pay players on time, whilst in November they avoided another embargo after paying a tax bill late.

Not only does that indicate that any replacement for Rohl would be hired via a shoe-string budget, limiting the available candidates, but many potential managers would be put off by a transfer ban for the next season and a half.

As such, it is heavily likely that Wednesday’s next manager will be currently unemployed.

Fabio Pecchia has been out of work since February, when he was sacked by Serie A outfit Parma.

Parma dismissed their manager after struggling upon their return to the Italian top flight, Pecchia having won promotion by winning Serie B last season.

It was Pecchia's third promotion from Serie B, having finished second with both Cremonese in the 2016-17 season and Hellas Verona in the 2016/17 campaign.

However, Pecchia quit Cremonese before managing a single Serie A game, taking over as Parma manager in the summer of 2022.

Pecchia's coaching journey has been fairly atypical, starting off managing in the lower Italian leagues after a playing career that saw the defender represent big clubs such as Juventus and Napoli.

After working as a manager in Italy, Pecchia would go on to link up with Rafa Benitez at Napoli, starting a partnership that would travel to Real Madrid and Newcastle United.

Following Newcastle's relegation to the Championship in 2016, Pecchia would restart his managerial career with Hellas Verona.

He achieved promotion in his first season, but was unable to avoid relegation the following year - leading to his departure.

Shortly after he made a drastic move to Japan, where he managed Avispa Fukuoka, then in the Japanese second tier.

Pecchia also had a stint managing Juventus' under-23s, completing a CV with experience at many different levels, differing circumstances, and various clubs.

Sheffield Wednesday might be tempted to sign a promotion specialist with some experience of English football.

Henrik Pedersen

Currently one of Danny Rohl’s assistants at Wednesday, the Owls may turn to Henrik Pedersen to take charge of the club in the case of the German exiting this summer.

Not only would there be continuity, Pedersen obviously working closely with the current crop of players, but there would also be solidarity, with the 47-year-old clearly aware of the club’s financial situation.

Of course, from a financial standpoint, it will be far cheaper to promote from within in comparison to recruiting an external candidate.

Pedersen arrived as one of Rohl's assistants in October 2023, boasting quite the eccentric coaching journey, having worked as a youth coach for a host of Danish clubs before becoming a part of Red Bull's global stable of clubs.

He has since managed in Denmark, Norway, and Germany, and will likely fancy himself as a potential successor to Rohl.

Rob Edwards

Rob Edwards’ stock has wildly fluctuated over the past two seasons, after the former Welsh international endured many highs and lows with Luton Town.

Having led unfancied Luton Town to the Premier League back in 2023 via a win at Wembley, Edwards and the Hatters came straight back down to the Championship.

It turns out that the negative momentum garnered from relegation from the Premier League was hard to turnaround, with Luton finding themselves at the wrong end of the table once again.

Embroiled in a relegation battle, Luton decided to part ways with Edwards – leaving the Welshman currently out of work.

The miracles worked by Edwards at Luton suggests that he is more than capable of operating with a small budget.
