Rémy Cabella (34) stands as one of the few elder statesmen in a Lille OSC team that has made its immense trust in youth a key foundation to its project.
The result of this trust sees Lille on the verge of Champions League qualification with six games remaining in Ligue 1, as well as a trip to England, to play Aston Villa tonight in the Europa Conference League in what will be the club’s first-ever European quarter-final.
For Cabella it will be a return to a country where he had a brief stint as a player for Newcastle during the 2014/15 season. The forward played 34 games across all competitions but only managed to score once for the English side before a return to France beckoned.
In an interview with L’Équipe, Cabella admitted that he did not have many memories of Aston Villa from his time with The Magpies but described tonight’s fixture as being “like a Champions League game.”
Cabella explained, “It wasn’t like Newcastle, where we had perhaps the biggest atmosphere in England, in a black and white stadium.” As for tonight, the forward was clear, if he didn’t have many memories of Villa Park from before he was confident he was going to make some for tonight. “A match like Aston Villa, it’s a thrill. I’m going to move everyone.”
