Bristol City have emerged as one of the frontrunners to capture a young Brighton & Hove Albion winger on loan, according to reports.

Andy Moran has attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs, according to the Athletic, but the Robins and fellow second-tier side Stoke City are reportedly the most likely to land their target.

The move would be City's fourth summer signing, and the second to arrive on loan after Yu Hirakawa from Japanese side Machida Zelvia.

Our Bristol City Fan Pundit, Tom Sandy, has revealed his thoughts on the potential temporary switch.

The Robins fan can see the attraction of a player like Moran, but is unsure whether he is the answer to City's problems at present.

Speaking to Football League World, Tom said: After watching Bristol City tonight [against Coventry], we could definitely do with some depth out wide.

“I think we lacked quality, I think Mark Sykes has been poor the first couple of games. I think Harry Cornick isn’t up to the level, unfortunately. I don’t think Sam Bell played great and he picked up an injury in the game.

“So, I think signing a player out wide would be good, but whether a loan deal for Andy Moran is the move I would make, I’m not sure. “He was on loan at Blackburn last season, got two goals and six assists, I believe. He played well, but he played in a struggling Blackburn squad, you can see that by their league finish, and when you finish that low with a striker like Sammie Szmodics up front, who scored, I think, like 26 goals or something in the league, which is fantastic, obviously won the Golden Boot. I think when you have someone that good, and you don’t play that well, I think that reflects on the whole squad. And I don’t know if he’d be the player I’d go in for. “Especially, obviously, because we’ve been linked continuously with Scott Twine for this whole window. We look like we’re going to be imminently signing George Earthy from West Ham, who plays in a similar kind of position to Andy Moran, you know, plays across that three behind the striker, which is what we’re playing at the moment at Bristol City.

“So, whether I think the deal will happen, I’m not sure. Yeah, I think he’d be a good addition but I don’t know if he’s a necessary addition. I don’t know if that’s where we should be putting our eggs.”

Moran could be a low-risk option

Although Moran is yet to show a truly prolific streak, eight goal involvements in a struggling side at his age is a promising return that could improve even further this term.

With Twine likely to be a permanent deal if he arrives, and that potential move appearing to have hit snags, and with George Earthy more accustomed to playing through the middle, a move for Moran does have some merit.

As Tom notes, early signs suggest that Bristol could use some reinforcements out wide. A loan for Moran would place no long-term obligations on the Robins, would provide useful competition that could drive current players on, and would be a low-cost option compared to splashing on transfer fees and permanent contracts.
