This round of Championship matches could today settle the automatic promotion spots.

Leeds United, Burnley and Sheffield United have been by a country mile the best three teams in the Championship and it is a case of two from these three to automatically go up.

Then whoever misses out will be the hot favourite to go up in the play-offs.

At the moment, the closest ‘derby’ for Newcastle United fans is a near 300 miles round trip to Manchester City.

So whatever happens, Newcastle fans set to have at least two, possibly three, closer Premier League destinations next season.

This is how the Championship top end of the table looks on Monday morning with three rounds of games to play

(***Sheffield United were deducted two points. The penalty relating to the Blades defaulting on payments to other clubs during the 2022-23 season)

Today, Leeds United are home to Stoke at 3pm, whilst it is Burnley v Sheffield United  at 5.30pm. Wins for Leeds and Burnley would see both promoted today.

If that is the case, then it will trigger a £m windfall for Newcastle United and other Premier League clubs, as football finance expert Kieran Maguire explains:

“When Leicester and Southampton were relegated in 2022/23 and promoted the following season, £102m in parachute payments were saved…these savings have been split between Premier League clubs.

Should Burnley and Leeds be promoted today then a further £51m will be saved…this will also be divided between PL clubs.’

If it ended up that Burnley and Sheffield United were automatically promoted then that £51m figure would be even higher.

This is how the Premier League parachute payments are now paid out:

‘Parachute payments are a percentage of the equal share of broadcast revenue each Premier League club receives. The first year, the payment is 55%, the second year 45%, and the third year 20%.’

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League in 2022/23, whilst both Burnley and Sheffield United were relegated in 2023/24. So Burnley and Sheffield United would be entitled to a bigger parachute payment than Leeds United next season, if either of them don’t get promoted.

Of course, if all three of these clubs end up promoted, then Newcastle United and the other Premier League clubs will banks even more £m in terms of saved parachute payments.
