Former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart lays the blame at Ruben Amorim’s feet as Manchester United conceded yet another direct corner kick.

Tottenham captain Son Hueng-min had already pulled off the trick on United’s second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir when the two clubs clashed heads last Thursday in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup. That goal proved to be decisive, as the Red Devils were seemingly mounting a remarkable comeback after cutting the deficit from 3-0 to 3-2, only to concede a goal from a direct corner kick.

Therefore, the Man Utd fans could hardly believe their eyes when Matheus Cunha replicated Son’s goal after seven days, opening the scoring for Wolves who went on to claim a 2-0 victory over Ruben Amorim’s 10 men.

The Red Devils’ set-piece struggles have been well-illustrated, but conceding twice from direct corner kicks in the space of a week is certainly a new low.

For his part, Hart defended fellow goalkeeper Andre Onana, believing it wasn’t his fault. Instead, the Englishman blamed Amorim or whoever is responsible for set pieces (that would be his assistant Carlos Fernandes) as they left the Cameroonian unprotected while being surrounded by four opponents, including Matt Doherty.

“For all his (Andre Onana’s) strengths, dominating the six-yard box is not one of them,” noted Hart during his appearance on BBC’s Match of the Day.

“He (Ruben Amorim) said it himself, they’re going to have to suffer for a while.

“And they are, because clearly a lot of the players at that football club are not good enough.

“He has to be able to get rid of players and be allowed to bring players in who he feels can suit his system. But they are miles off it.”

Finding a solution for the club’s set-piece leak must be a priority for Amorim and his staff as the team continues to plummet towards historic lows.
